Jaguar Land Rover has filed for three new trademarks in Europe.

The trademarks, which are for I-Pace, I-Type and Velar appeared on the website of Europe’s Office of Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM).

AutoGuide.com has reported previously that Jaguar is working on electrified variants of its existing models including the F-Pace crossover and XE sedan. Jaguar has already said that the F-Pace will be the first candidate for an all-electric variant to compete with the Tesla Model X crossover. It certainly seems that the I-Pace nameplate could be used for such a model.

If I-Pace is user for the electric crossover, then it makes sense that the I-Type badge would find its way onto an all-electric F-Type sports car.

As for Velar, it is the name of an original Range Rover pre-production prototype. It appears the name is derived from “Velare,” the Italian word for “to veil” or “to cover.”

Electric powertrains aren’t foreign to Jaguar, which has experience with the C-X75 supercar project. Offering an electric vehicle will also soon be a requirement due to the new Zero Emission Vehicle legislation introduced in California and adopted by seven other states.
